Nathan L. Shipkowitz Obituary
Shipkowitz, Nathan L. Age 88, of Waukegan, beloved husband of the late Rosalie (nee Safina); loving son of the late Abraham and Ida; grandfather of the late Sarah Shipkowitz-Tjarksen. He grew up in Chicago, IL and graduated from Bowen High School at age 15. He entered the armed services during WWII as a Surgical Technician for the United States 164th General Hospital and finished the war with rank of Technician 5th Grade (Corporal). He received his PhD in Infectious Diseases /Virology from Michigan State University and worked for over 30 years at Abbott Laboratories, developing new medications and antibiotics, this was not only his job, but one of his passions in life. He was known around Abbott as "SuperNate" and was a prestigious member of the VOLWILER Society. Dear father of Reuben, Tanya, Eirene (Patrick Smith) Shipkowitz-Smith, Gita (Erik Tjarksen) Shipkowitz; cherished "Poppy" of Rosalie and Jacob Smith, and Adam and Rachel Tjarksen, who were the joy of his life; fond brother of Libby (Joe) Sanes and Irving (Davida) Shipkowitz; brother-in-law to William "Billy" Safina, and Bertha Berston; beloved uncle to many. The family would like to thank the years of compassionate care and dedication provided to their father by his attending physician Dr. K.Y. Lin, as well as his loving caregiver, Margie Myers. The family will forever remember and miss his forceful determination and unique sense of humor. Funeral services Thursday, 10:30 a.m. at Piser Chapels, 9200 N. Skokie Blvd (at Church Street), Skokie.
