Potkonjak, Mary Eva (nee Pavletic), 89, a longtime resident of Waukegan, died Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. Wife of the late Todor S. Potkonjak (2006). Mother of Theodore (Diana) Potkonjak of Antioch, Marianne (Ron) Johnson of Mesa, AZ, Elena (Rick) Clymer of Green Oaks and Steve (Kim) Potkonjak of Loveland, CO. Grandmother of Sam, Andrea, Joe, Jack & Ellie Potkonjak, Natasha & Jeremy Johnson and Maria Clymer. Sister of Helen (Bud) Halford of Antioch and the late Antone Pavletic. Sister-in-law of Sofia (the late Milan) Maodus of Windsor, Ontario Canada. She also leaves her cousins; Vila (the late Raymond) Green and Merle (Geri) Pavletic and many nieces and nephews. Mary was born August 3, 1921 in Chicago, graduated from Waukegan Township High School in 1940, received her nursing degree from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing (Loras College) in Dubuque, IA (1950), received her BSN from St. Francis University (1977), was a veteran of the U.S. Army (WWII), former Red Cross nurse, retired as the Head Nurse of a Medical-Surgical Unit at St. Therese Hospital in Waukegan after serving there for 35 years where she was a longtime volunteer at the hospital after her retirement. Mary had a passion for reading, especially enjoyed the annual Mercy Hospital "get-together" with her classmates and the monthly St. Therese Hospital retired nurses luncheon. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and a member of the St. Sava Lodge No. 74 of the Serbian National Federation. Funeral mass 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 19th at Most Blessed Trinity-Immaculate Conception Church, 510 Grand Ave., Waukegan, IL 60085. Interment will follow at St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Monastery Cemetery in Libertyville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the USO, P.O. Box 96322, Washington, DC 20090-6322 or to St. Basil Serbian Orthodox Church, 27450 N. Bradley Rd., Lake Forest, IL 60045.
