Dr. Richard Hawkins Obituary
Hawkins M.D., Richard K. Dr. Richard K. Hawkins, M.D., 90, a resident of Libertyville, IL for 55 years, and recently living in Ft. Wayne, IN, passed away on Friday, April 8, 2011 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born on Feb. 22, 1921 in Kalamazoo, MI, Richard came to Libertyville in 1954 to establish his medical practice and to raise his family. Richard was a US Army Veteran who proudly served his country during WWII as a member of the 84th Infantry Division, 334th Regiment, 1st Battalion in the European Theater. By the end of his tour of active duty, Richard was promoted to the rank of Captain and was awarded the silver and bronze star medals for gallantry in action. He also received the distinguished unit citation. After returning home from military service in 1946, he wed Eleanore C. Fritz of St. Joseph, MI, and continued to serve in the US Army Reserves until 1953. He was also a member of the Libertyville American Legion Post #329. Dr. Hawkins received his Bachelors degree from Western Michigan College, a Master of Arts degree in Anatomy from the University of South Dakota, and a Doctor of Medicine degree from Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago, IL. In addition to his 32-year private medical practice, Richard also served as president of the medical staff at Condell Memorial Hospital in Libertyville. He was a beloved member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Libertyville, Beautiful Savior Church in Ft. Wayne, IN, and Redeemer Lutheran Church in Merritt Island, FL. While at St. John's, Richard served as president of the congregation and a member of the church choir. He was also president of the Friendship Force of Northern Illinois, and an active member of the Lake County Camera Club. He is survived by his loving, dedicated wife Eleanore; 5 children, Susan (Pastor Thomas) Speidel of Fort Wayne, IN, Mary (Bruce) Dawson of Taylorville, IL, Steven (Susan) Hawkins of Antioch, IL, Catherine Hawkins of Macon, GA, and Jeffrey (Marian) Hawkins of Portage, MI; 10 Grandchildren, Laura, Julie, Rebecca, and Peter (Lisa) Speidel; Elizabeth (Kenny) Elkins, Christina and Steven Dawson; Carolyn, William and Karl Hawkins; his dear American Field Service exchange student daughter, Betty Casarsa-Marques of Brazil; brother, Maj. Harold (Erin) Hawkins, USMC Ret., of Borrego Springs, CA, and sister, Barbara Siegrist of Chowchilla, CA. His parents and brothers, Robert, Charles, Dr. Roger Hawkins and infant sister, Louise preceded him. Richard truly loved the Lord and he treasured every moment he spent with his family and friends. He also had a great love for animals, photography, traveling and spending the winter at their home in Cocoa, Florida. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the BURNETT-DANE FUNERAL HOME, 120 W. Park Ave. (Rte. 176) Libertyville. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 14, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 501 W. Park Ave. (Rte. 176) Libertyville. Interment will follow at Lakeside Cemetery. Memorials can be made to either Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, IN, St. John's Lutheran Church in Libertyville, Redeemer Lutheran Church in Merritt Island, FL or the Condell Medical Center Continuing Medical Education Fund.
