Johnson, Ethel "Toby" (Nee Stowell), 92, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who embraced her family and life with great enthusiasm, passed away peacefully and joined our Lord on Sunday, March 6, 2011, in Zion, Illinois. Toby was born August 30, 1918, in Chicago, and grew up near Wrigley Field in Lakeview, where she met the love of her life and eventual husband of sixty-seven years, the late Glen Edgar Johnson. They moved to Skokie in 1952 and lived there for nearly fifty years, moving to Lake County in 2000. Toby's life and passion was her children and grandchildren, in addition to being an "adopted Mom" to many. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, St. Timothy's Lutheran Church (both in Skokie), and Prince of Peace Lutheran Church (Waukegan). Toby was a self-proclaimed domestic engineer; a two-time survivor of cancer; an avid fan of Mahjong and crossword puzzles; and a die-hard Cubs fan. She also enjoyed exploring her Stowell genealogy, dating back to 1066 in England. Toby will be fondly remembered by her children Terryl (Shelley) Johnson and Diana (Bob) Gornik; her grandchildren Laura (Pete) Sidor, Terryl II (Denise) Johnson, Sean (Flora) Johnson, Jason (Emily) Wild, Jamie (Michelle) Wild, Jenny (Danny) Gornik, Lisa (Patrick) Worklan, Jessy Gornik, Caryn (Craig) Caffarelli, and Andrew (Jennifer) Goldberg; twelve great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion, IL. Interment will follow at Ridgewood Cemetery in Des Plaines.
