Elsie Tonyan, age 98, of McHenry, died Tuesday, May 26, at Hearth Stone Manor, Woodstock.
She was born February 12, 1911 in Waukegan to Anton and Mary (Pekley) Stebley. On January 5, 1937, she married Sylvester "Wes" Tonyan in Waukegan. Elsie was a 1929 graduate of Waukegan Township High School.
Elsie was a longtime resident of the McHenry Johnsburg area. She was the Vice President of her husbands business, Tonyan Bros. Inc., for 44 years. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Church. She was an avid bridge player, enjoyed traveling and read three newspapers daily. Elsie was a devoted grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by a son, James (Laura) Tonyan of McHenry; a son-in-law, John Regner of McHenry; four grandchildren, Sara (Franz) Kuehnrich of Bartlett, John Regner Jr. of McHenry, Lindsay Tonyan of Evanston, Wesley Tonyan of McHenry; and three great-grandchildren, Philip, Audria and William.
She was preceded in death by her Wes Tonyan on December 20, 1981; a daughter, Audrey on December 31, 2001; her parents; and a brother, Robert Stebley.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m., on Sunday, May 31, 2009 at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 West Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, IL 60050. Visitation will continue on Monday, June 1, from 9:30 a.m. until the funeral Mass celebrated at 10:30 a.m., at St. John The Baptist Church, 2302 West Church Avenue, Johnsburg, IL 60051. Interment will be in St. John The Baptist Church, Johnsburg.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to send an expression of condolence, memorials to St. John the Baptist Church Restoration Fund, Hospice of Northeaster Illinois or F.I.S.H would be appreciated by the family.
