Small, Eugene R. "Gene" Age 81, of 18376 Kramer Rd., East Dubuque, Illinois, formerly of Waukegan, Illinois died at 4:15 a.m. Monday, June 18, 2012 at Heritage Manor. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The Miller Funeral Home of East Dubuque is in charge of arrangements. Gene was born on January 17, 1931 in Ironwood, Michigan, the son of Luther J. and Sylvia E. (Koivula) Small. He was a 1949 graduate of Waukegan Township High School and served in the Army Security Agency during the Korean Conflict. Gene married Dorothy Sevander on July 22, 1950 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waukegan. He formerly was employed by the Lake County Press in Waukegan where he started out as a delivery boy, worked in sales and was Vice President at the time of his retirement. Gene loved the river and all of his toys. He enjoyed boating, snowmobiling, their houseboat, jet boat, ATV's, "Big John" his John Deere Tractor, their motor-home and riding on the Red Mule with Casey the dog by his side. Gene was an avid outdoorsman and just enjoyed tinkering. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; three children, Mark Small of Dubuque, IA, Todd Small of Pleasant Prairie, WI and Kim (Ralph) Schmidt of Wauconda, IL; Five grandchildren, Eric (Victoria) Small, Brett and Joanna Small, Nikki and Elle Schmidt; His aunt Irma Sarkela of Ironwood, MI. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Timothy John Small; a brother, Jack; his in-laws, Albert and Anna Sevander; sister-in-law, Alberta Blanks and his two buddies, Red and Casey. A Gene Small memorial fund has been established. Dorothy and family would like to give special thanks to Dani and all the Staff at Heritage Manor and to Hospice of Dubuque for the wonderful care given to Gene.
