Barbara C. Alfano
Barbara C. Alfano was born on September 28, 1935 to Fred (Fritz) and Carol Alfano. She lived in Beach Park and Waukegan. She gave so much love and care during her life as a caregiver to her grandparents, Joseph & Caroline Kutzler, parents, Fritz & Carol Alfano, and aunt, Pearl Celesnik.
Barbara had been deaf since 10 months old. When she was in 3rd grade, the Waukegan Kiwanis Club began financing a hard of hearing class at Whittier School where Barbara graduated in 1951. Due to her deafness, it was impossible for her to attend high school, and her parents had her tutored. In summer 1959, she attended a course for the hearing impaired sponsored by the State of Illinois Department of Education at Northern Illinois University. In fall 1959 she was named the Kiwanis Club "Sweetheart" who won victory over deafness and earned the right to go to Northern Illinois University at DeKalb as a freshman at the age of 24. In September 1960, she was a contestant in the Miss SNPJ contest.
Barbara spent her time as a volunteer at the Waukegan Public Library for 8 years, Waukegan Historical Society for 7 years. For the last 21years, she lived at Lilac Ledge in Waukegan and was a volunteer server for special functions and a floor captain on the 12th floor.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Waukegan, and had been a member for over 45 years of the Ladies Fraternal Order of Eagles #2157 and SNPJ Lodge 14 & 584.
She is survived by her cousin and caregivers Jean & Mike O'Reilly (Rio Verde AZ) and their families: Suzanne O'Reilly, TJ Michaelson, Reilly Michaelson (Libertyville IL), and Mickey, Schelly, Suzanne, Abbey, Emma, Katie (godchild), & Michael O'Reilly (Acworth GA). Barbara is also survived by uncles John Alfano and Joseph Potocek, aunt Rita Alfano, cousins in Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Texas, Wisconsin, friends at Lilac Ledge and Waukegan Public Library, and very special friends Dottie & Edgar Cullum and Mary and Maggie Maxwell.
A special thank you for the care and kindness extended to Barbara from The Seasons Hospice staff, Noonie, Maria, Nancy, Marcy, Angie, and Denise; and the Brentwood North Healthcare staff, and everyone that kept in contact with her with cards, e-mails, and visits during the last six months.
