Obituary Condolences

Backis, Antoinette Barbara 95, of Waukegan, IL, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 4th. She was born on September 17, 1917, in Waukegan, Illinois, to George and Barbara (Kaminskas) Bukantis. Antoinette was a lifelong member of St. Bartholomew/Most Blessed Trinity Church, where she sang in the choir, was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, the St. Bartholomew School Mother's Club, a lector at Mass, and served on the Parish Council. For many years, she was involved in Meals-on-Wheels and could be found weekly serving and cooking meals in the St. Bartholomew Soup Kitchen. Antoinette is survived by her children, Robert (Carolyn) Backis of Chicago, IL, Joseph (Taryn) Backis of Waukegan, IL, and Thomas (Alene) Backis of Beach Park, IL; her grandchildren, Alexandra Backis, of Chicago, IL and Robert and Timothy Backis of Gilbert, Arizona; many loving nieces and nephews; as well as her two beloved cats, Kitty and Old Man. Antoinette was preceded in death by her parents, George and Barbara Bukantis; her husband, Joseph Backis, Jr., owner of Backis Grocery and Meats; by her son, Richard; as well as three brothers, George, Walter, and Anthony Bukantis; and four sisters, Gertrude Karas, Veronica Gust, Anne Kuzmickus, and Mary Schwartz. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM on Monday, December 10th, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM, at Most Blessed Trinity Church, 450 Keller Avenue, Waukegan, IL. Burial will follow at Ascension Cemetery in Libertyville, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holy Family Soup Kitchen, 450 Keller Avenue, Waukegan, IL 60085.
