Herndon Sr., Silas Kent God called Silas to eternal rest Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Evanston North Shore Hospital. Silas Herndon was born May 18, 1947 in Lynchburg, Virginia to Ben James and Sara Elizabeth Herndon, both preceded him in death. Silas served in the United States Army obtaining the rank of Captain. After moving from Alaska to Waukeganin 1984, Silas became a member of Rehoboth Church of God in Christ, where Elder Eugene Jones is the pastor. Silas served in the ministry for many years. In 2005 God lead Silas to The Sign of the Dove Church, where Apostle Harry A. Stackhouse is the pastor. Silas taught New Members class and served with the ministers and in the Men's department. Silas worked in the social service, substance abuse, and counseling arena along with being a child care advocate. Silas was certified with the State of Illinois as a Substance Abuse Counselor and was certified in Clinical Pastoral Education. Silas was the Director of the Eddie Washington Center,he retired from the Eddie Washington Center in 2012. Silas was dedicated in supporting many programs and services that aided in reducing recidivism and homelessness. Silas was an active member of several local organizations, such as the Coalition to Reduce Recidivism, the North Chicago Rotary Club, Partners in Business Association and its therapeutic monitoring program. In addition, he served on the Lake County 19th Judicial Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee and the Board of Directors for Salvation Army. Silas was a devoted husband to Carolyn R. Herndon until her death. From this union they had five children: Kellie Herndon (Illinois); Kristi (Ettienne) Smith (Illinois); Silas Jr. (Illinois); James (Illinois) and John Herndon (Massachusetts). In 1996, Silas married his beloved wife and best friend, Tina. From this union were born two children: Tiara and Talbert Herndon (Illinois). Silas was the grandfather of three: Della, Jeanvieve, and Dayanna. Silas also leaves to cherish his memory his brother Ben James Herndon Jr. (Helen) of Virginia; three sisters, Mrs. Gwendolyn Bowman (Andrew) of Virginia; Mrs. Arshall C. Fields of Virginia, and Mrs. Mary B. Brooks (Mack) of Virginia, a host of nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 10:00 AM at The Sign of the Dove Church 424 10th Street, Waukegan, IL. In Lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in honor of Silas Herndon to R.O.P.E., 424 10th Street, Waukegan, IL 60085 or the Eddie Washington Center, 149 S. Genesee, Waukegan, IL 60085.
