Robert J. Martin

Martin, Robert J. "Bob" 90, of Gurnee passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2013 at home. Bob was born December 14, 1922 in Brooklyn, NY and later relocated to Ossing, NY where he was raised. He served in the CCC during the depression and as a young man worked in Idaho and Montana building some of the National Parks. Bob served in the United States Navy for 27 years having enlisted in 1941 at the start of WWII having served in the European Theatre, the Pacific, Korean War, Cuban Missile Crisis and Viet Nam War. He served and ran the engine room aboard many ships at sea working his way up through the ranks becoming a commissioned Chief Warrant Officer. He loved the Navy. He continued his service based in Brooklyn, NY, New London, CT, San Diego, CA, San Francisco, CA, Guam and retiring from Great Lakes Naval Base in 1966. After retirement from the Navy, Bob worked for 19 years at Anchor Hocking Glass in Gurnee where he ran the compressor room for the glass bottling manufacturing company retiring in 1985. He was an avid reader and self taught engineer. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Wadsworth, the Gurnee American Legion and the VFW. Till the day of his passing, he spent his time walking at Gurnee Mills doing the morning tour and at Warren Newport Library "quiet room". He lived in Grandwood Park where "if you lived here you would be home". He is survived by three children, Robert "Bob" Martin of Edmonton, Canada, Nancy (David) Karnes of Seattle, WA, and Joseph (Kathy) Martin of Gurnee, IL; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years Catherine in 1992 to whom he was united in marriage to in 1949. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30am Thursday, May 23, 2013 at St. Patrick's Church 15000 Wadsworth Rd., Wadsworth, IL. Interment with full military honors will follow at Ft.
