James E. Butler

Butler, James Edward 78, of Waukegan, IL, passed away on May 2, 2014 at Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI. James was born May 10, 1935 in Jefferson County, GA, the son of Julia Mae Thompson Davis. When he was 13 years old, his mother and stepfather, Walter Davis, died. He was adopted by family friends, Roland and Helen Butler of New Brighton, PA. He attended New Brighton High School. In 1954, he joined the US Navy to serve his country and "to see the world." He was stationed on the destroyer USS Clarence K. Bronson DD-668. He received the Navy Occupation Service Medal "E" Clasp, Good Conduct Medal and an Honorable Discharge in 1958. James moved to North Chicago, IL in 1971, and was employed at International Harvester in Libertyville, IL. He was a carpenter and remodeled many homes in Lake County, IL. He loved to fish and play cards with his friends but most of all enjoyed spending time with his family. He traveled extensively throughout the United States, including Alaska. He leaves to cherish his memory, his stepsons, LaMonte Bray of Forest Park, OK and Muricle Bray of New York, NY; cousins, Eula Rodgers and Isaiah (Constella) Turner of Waukegan, IL, Susie Fisher of Gurnee, IL and Samuel (Marsha) Turner of Orlando, FL, and a host of other relatives and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his mother; stepfather; adoptive parents; wife, Evelyn Bray Butler; stepdaughter Sonia Pherris Webb; longtime friend and companion Viola Truitt Jackson, and his beloved aunt, Annie Jessie Thompson Turner. James was a devoted nephew, cousin and friend. He was a kind, caring gentleman who was always willing to help others. He will be dearly missed and always be remembered by those who loved him. A Celebration of His Life MemorialService will be held at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday,May 14, 2014 at Bradshaw & Range Funeral Home.
