Anthony J. Ryder Obituary
Anthony J. Ryder December 28, 1913 to October 26, 2009 Anthony Ryder, 95, of Basking Ridge, NJ, formerly of Massillon, Ohio and Sag Harbor, NY, passed away after a short illness during a visit at the home of his son in Naperville, IL. Born of Polish immigrants in then-rural eastern Long Island, NY, Anthony, one of six children, attended Pierson High School and graduated with a BS in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1935. Anthony relocated to Massillon, Ohio shortly after graduation where he found employment with the Griscom Russell Company for whom he worked for many years as a welding engineer and factory manager. He received several patents and contributed to the war effort through the production of torpedo tubes and special systems (desalination units) for submarines. Later in his career he worked for Babcock & Wilcox and played an important role in the manufacture of nuclear power systems for the US Navy. In 1943 he married Beatrix Bates, a native of Massillon. Together they raised three sons. Hobbies included reading, photography and golf. Tony was an avid golfer and, although he had only one hole-in-one, he scored his age or lower several times while in his late 80's and early 90's. He reluctantly gave up the game at the age of 92. Gardening was also a key avocation as he annually supplied the neighborhood with tomatoes. Unfortunately this activity gave way to several years of care-giving for his beloved wife who passed away after a lengthy illness in 2002. Anthony's quiet strength, unfailing common sense, and loving spirit will remain an inspiration to his family. Anthony is lovingly remembered by his sister Regina Melton, of North Haven, Long Island, his brother Joseph Ryder of Roanoke, VA, his three sons and their spouses, Michael and Nonie Ryder of Naperville, IL, Joseph and Jonni Marie Ryder of Basking Ridge, NJ, and Steven and Shirley Ryder, of Madison, AL, as well as seven grandchildren, several great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Anthony's life will be celebrated at a Funeral Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville today, Tuesday, October 27, at 10:30 AM. The family will receive relatives and friends beginning at 9:30 AM at the church. Interment will be in Massillon, OH. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Thomas OSJ (Haiti Twinning), 1500 Brookdale Rd., Naperville, IL, 60563.
