Evans, Larry 78, of Naperville, died August 10, 2014, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He was born on July 14, 1936, in Rosamond, IL. Learning and teaching were the joys of Larry's life. His love of history - American history in particular - enriched his knowledge both in the classroom and, to the chagrin of his opponents, in a game of Trivial Pursuit. He was a voracious reader of history and historical fiction; booksellers at Anderson's Bookshop knew him by name. He was loyal, principled, opinionated and was a skilled dance partner, especially in the foxtrot. Larry taught at Plainfield High School, 1963 to 2004, serving as chairman of the Department of Social Sciences, 1968 to 1978, and was a director of the Illinois Education Association. After retirement, Larry relished a new professional life as an adjunct history instructor at Lewis University, Romeoville. It was perhaps the happiest time in his life. Larry earned his undergraduate degree in history from Blackburn College in Carlinville, IL. He then earned a master's degree in history with an emphasis in American diplomatic history from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He further pursued his education with postgraduate courses in the late 1960s and 1970s at the University of Hawaii and Northern Illinois University. Larry served in the U.S. Army, 1959-1961, as an MOS (Military Occupation Specialty)-Clerk-Typist, stationed in Orleans, France, for 15 months. He loved to reminisce about his time abroad, which gave him his lifelong appreciation of French culture, food and wine. He snagged the plum European assignment with his basic knowledge of French, which he'd learned in high school. Larry is survived by his wife, Gloria Evans; sister-in-law, Jeannine Schmidt; nephew, Richard (Sharon) Schmidt; niece, Denise (Jeff) Hudson; great-nieces, Kristen (Bear) Braumoeller and Amanda (Dan) Peck; great-nephews, Jeremy (Amy) Hudson and Jason Hudson; great-grandnephew, Cole Peck; and cousins, Norma Evans, Frana Evans, Linda Barringer and Linda Moss, all of Central Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Martha (nee Pyle) Evans; and brother-in-law, John Schmidt. A visitation and celebration of Larry's life will be held at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home & Crematory, 516 S. Washington St., Naperville, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m., Sunday, August 17. The family invites visitors to stay for a 4:00 p.m. remembrance and for refreshments and fellowship afterwards. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Larry's name to Lewis University, History Dept. Info: 630-355-0264, www.beidelmankunschfh.com.
