Obituary Condolences Gallery

Calico, Marie (nee Miller) Born June 12, 1919 to John J. Miller and Gertrude Kling Miller in Naperville, IL.Passed away December 18, 2013. Fourth of thirteen children she was a buoyant and unifying spirit, who loved her sisters and brothers and was proud of them all to the end. Though possessed of a deep desire to learn, Marie dropped out of school after the 8th grade to help care for the "little ones" when her mother became ill. When she was 25, she had the opportunity to go back and attend New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois, a dream she never expected to see fulfilled. She finished in 1 year and 8 1/2 months and went on to nurses training. She received a scholarship to attend a school of her choosing to get her B.S. in Public Health Nursing at the University of Washington in Seattle. As she was finishing up her degree, she met Frank Calico. They were married August 3, 1952. Marie and Frank were married for 61 years. 1953 saw the birth of their daughter Anne, followed a few years later by daughter Laura and son Bruce. Although Mom was proud of her late education and proud to be a nurse, she always said her proudest achievement was the raising of her children. There is no doubt she might have been equally proud that she achieved the title of "Master Gardener".We know she always did the best she could and loved us with all her heart. She continued as mentor and friend to the end. Marie is survived by husband, Franklin A.Calico; daughters, Anne Calico and Laura Calico (Mark) Corker; son, Bruce (Nichole) Calico; grandchildren, Joshua (Masako), Anson and Mac Calico and Azelie and Jocelyn Corker; great-grandson, Aiden Calico; sisters, Grace Lichter, Mayme Heyne, Helen Hoffman, and Nancy Harper and brothers, Paul, Peter and Jim Miller. She is also survived by 44 nieces and nephews and former daughter-in-law, Gloria White Calico. No services are planned.
