Marie "Marian" Vavrik

Vavrik, Marie Ann "Marian" 79, passed away April 15, 2013 in Sun City West, Arizona surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 11, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois, to Frank and Marie (Sindelar) Konecny. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, William Edward Vavrik. She was raised in Stickney, IL and graduated from Morton High School (Cicero), Morton Junior College, and Illinois Teacher's College (now Northern Illinois University). She worked as a legal secretary, grade school teacher, and children's librarian. Above all, Marian loved being a teacher to her own children and to the thousands of other children in Naperville who attended her nursery school classes and story hours at Nichols Library, where she worked for 17 years. Marian was a voracious reader and world traveler, and she imparted her love of reading and travel to her family. Marian was vivacious and strong and created a legacy of love for her family. Her devotion to her children was evidenced by her high expectations for their education and hundreds of trips to Girl Scout meetings, Little League games, and dance, swimming, and piano lessons. Marian was fluent in Czech and passionate about sharing her Czech heritage with her friends, children, and grandchildren. She was an officer of the Czech-Slovak Club of America and founding patron of the Czech Center Museum Houston. Marian was a devoted wife to her husband, Bill, whom she met in 1951 in Stickney, Illinois and married on June 15, 1957. They lived in Brookfield and Naperville, IL until moving to Arizona in 1999. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, Dr. Diane (Davis) Crater of Afton, MN, Carole (Robert) Lopez of Houston, TX, and Steven (Ellen Hayes) Vavrik of Austin, TX. She is also survived by grandchildren Teresa and Cassandra Lopez, Scott Crater, and William, Charles, and George Vavrik. She was predeceased by her parents; sister, Pauline Konecny Spiro; brother, Vladimir Konecny, and granddaughter, Robin Crater. A celebration of Marian's life was held in Arizona. A private graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Stickney, IL.
