Leon "Elby" Backes

Backes, Leon J. "Elby" 82, of Big Rock, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on July 10, 2013. He was born on December 22, 1930 in Aurora, IL the son of Matthew and Alice Backes. He proudly served his country during the Korean War with the United States Air Force. Leon spent countless hours adorning the graves with flags of Veterans who had passed before him. He retired in 1989 from Sheet Metal Local 73. He was a member of the VFW Montgomery Post 7452, Phoenix Club and the Tiger Club. He enjoyed gardening, Nascar, reading, was a Chicago Bears season ticket holder and had a passion for old time country music. Leon loved his family and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his children, Greg (Patricia) Backes, Ed (Cindi) Backes, Joe Backes, Marie Peterson, and David (Betsy) Backes; grandchildren, Patrick and Amanda Backes, Jacob, Jason and Julia Backes, John Peterson, and Katie and Lauren Backes. He is also survived by his faithful dog, Rocco. He is preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Alice; second wife, Mary; and sister, Virginia Wehrli. Family will be receiving guests on Friday, July 12, 2013 from 3:00 to 8:00 pm at Dieterle Memorial Home, 1120 S. Broadway Ave., Montgomery, IL 60538. Funeral Mass will be on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Good Counsel 620 5th Street, Aurora, IL 60505. Inurnment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
