Evelyn R. Engelking

Engelking, Evelyn Rosetta January 16, 1923 January 11, 2014; Evelyn Engelking passed away in Naperville, IL on January 11. She is survived by her daughters, Connie Jorgensen (Eric) and Elana Wittenburg (Bob); grandchildren, Lynn and Mike, and great-grandchildren, Kaleigh and Noah. She was preceded in death by Harold, her husband of 69 years. Evelyn was born in Lincoln, NE. She graduated from high school at 16 after skipping 2 grades. She began college in 1959, graduating from Drake University. She taught elementary school for several years and was then selected for a Master's Program in Counseling at the University of Illinois. After receiving her Master's Degree she was a guidance counselor until moving to Brazil with her husband, who was on assignment for the United Nations. Upon their return she changed careers and became a Tour Guide. Given her gift for organization and outgoing personality, it was a perfect fit that she enjoyed very much. Evelyn was an avid gardener creating a showplace where she hosted her many friends. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and served multiple terms as a Deacon and Elder. She was a committed, dedicated volunteer for many charitable causes. After living in Carbondale for 45 years the Engelkings moved to Naperville in 2010 to be closer to their daughter. Evelyn became proficient in every endeavor she tackled; made wedding dresses for both of her daughters, rewired her home and did carpentry. She was also a contestant on "Wheel of Fortune" for four consecutive days. Her many friends will remember Evelyn as a warm, beautiful, loving woman and she will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 20 at 11:00 a.m. at Knox Presbyterian Church in Naperville, IL.
