Johnston, Irwin A. "Irv" February 17, 1940 to March 5, 2013. Lifelong resident of Elgin, Illinois. Irv passed away peacefully at his home in Elgin. Irv was born and raised in Elgin and graduated from Elgin High School. He was one of five children born to the late Alan and Gertrude (Schaderberg) Johnston. A standout athlete in both football and wrestling; Irv received "All Area", "All State" and "All American" honors. Irv attended Southern Illinois University where he again was a standout wrestler and football player earning state and national honors for both sports. It was there where he met his cherished wife of 49 years Sandra (Hudson) Johnston. They wed on March 21, 1964 and began a beautiful life together, built a home and travelled extensively. They have three beloved children, Pamela (Douglas Fick), Timothy (Victoria) and Lonni (Becky). Irv became an educator in the U-46 school district, teaching and coaching at Elgin High. He later became an administrator for the district and principal at Canton Middle School in Streamwood, IL before retiring in 1998. He was named Kane County Educator Of The Year in 1989. He was also inducted to the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame in 1987. Irv was blessed with nine grandchildren, Joseph, Casey, Brian, Samuel, Allison, Paul, Mathew, Eric and Shaun whom he adored and showered with affection daily. He was not only a coach for athletics, but a coach in life to all he encountered. His passion for this life, both professional and personal can never be measured. Irv touched the lives of countless people with his smile, generosity, compassion and wisdom. He will be truly missed. Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Visitation at Laird Funeral Home, 310 S.
