Crockett, Stewart Clark Age 85, died Wednesday, January 23, 2013, surrounded by his loving family, at St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin, IL The cause of death was cardio-pulmonary disease. He was born June 25, 1927, in Chattanooga, TN, the son of the Rev. Barney C. Crockett and Wilhelmena Olga (Winter) Crockett. The first seventeen years of his life were spent in Signal Mountain, TN, Big Rock, IL, Grays Lake, IL and Minneapolis, MN. He graduated from Marshall High School, Minneapolis, in 1944 and immediately entered the Army Specialized Training Reserve Program, and after basic training in Texas, served for two years in the U.S. Army of Occupation in Germany immediately after the end of WWII. He graduated from Grinnell College, Iowa, in 1950 and received his M. A. in Social Work from the University of Iowa in 1958. He met Gretchen Almberg at SUI and they were married June 13, 1953. He worked for two years in Independence, Iowa and then moved to Illinois where he began a 31-year association with School District U-46 (Elgin, IL) as a School Social Worker. Stewart was an avid barbershop singer and was a long-term member of the Elgin Minutemen of Harmony Chorus and several quartets, including the Grandfather's Clock. He was a member of First Congregational Church and a member of the choir there for over forty years, as well as serving on several committees. Stewart had an insatiable curiosity and liked to say, "the universe is my hobby." He was a volunteer in many organizations, and had a great love of people and ideas. He was loving father of four children, Suzanne (Dennis) McQuen of Elgin, Peter (Lori) Crockett, of Elgin, Daniel Crockett of Chicago, and Rebecca Crockett of Elgin; grandfather of Rachael (Brendan) Costello of Algonquin, IL, Damon Crockett of San Diego, CA, Ryan (Alicia) McQuen of Everett, WA and Tristan (Samantha) Crockett of Somerville, MA. He also had three great-grandchildren, Ronan, Maura and Maeve Costello, and a niece, Elizabeth (Robert) Shay of Columbia, MO, a nephew, John (Cynthia) Crockett, of Westminster, VT, and a grandniece, Katie Shay, of Columbia, MO. He is also survived by his ex-wife, Gretchen (Jerry) Hochburger of Bartlett, IL, his brother, the Rev. Larrimore (Ellen) Crockett, of Dummerston, VT, and his longtime companion, Carol Plagge. Stewart deeply enjoyed frequent Sunday night gatherings of his close-knit family, and so a gathering to be with family and friends in Stewart's memory will be held this Sunday, January 27, 2013 at the First Congregational Church, 256 E. Chicago Street, Elgin, IL, 3 to 6 p.m. A memorial service will be held later in the spring. Stewart willed his body to the University of Iowa Medical School. No flowers, please.
