Carter, James Edward Age 88, of Asbury Gardens in North Aurora, IL; formerly of Montgomery, IL; passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the Willow Crest Nursing Pavilion in Sandwich, IL. He was born on June 7, 1925 in Minneapolis, MN the son of Albert Edward and Marcella Rose (Potter) Carter. James was united in marriage on February 25, 1950 to the former Miss Dorothy Wood (ISD 1947) and they spent 62 happy years together until her passing on December 29, 2012. Mr. Carter served his country from 1948 to 1949 as a member of the Illinois National Guard. Jimmy graduated in 1941 from the Illinois School for the Deaf. During his lifetime commitment to the Illinois Association of the Deaf he served as a Trustee, Secretary, Vice President and President. Governor Thompson appointed Jim to the State Consumer Advisory Council. Jim also accepted Governor Edgars request to serve on the Statewide Independent Living Council and received its highest Service Award. Mr. Carter was employed for 23 years at Stoner Manufacturing in Aurora, IL then for 26 years at Furnas Electric Company in Batavia, IL. In the Research Division until his retirement. He was a lifetime member of the Barber Green Hunting and Fishing Club where he enjoyed the great outdoors with his many friends. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed nothing more than researching a subject of interest or a great conversation about Christian history or, his favorite topic, World War I. Days before his passing Jim stated that there was so much more he wanted to learn. Recently he had taken up painting and photography as two special hobbies and he greatly enjoyed feeding birds on his patio. Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be deeply missed by his family and friends. James is survived by his only child, his daughter and best friend along with her husband who he loved as his own son, Susan and Michael Thanepohn of Sandwich, IL; his grandchildren, Chad A. (Julie) Thanepohn of Seneca, IL, Michelle (David) Weidner of Peoria, IL and Robert H. Thanepohn of Sandwich, IL; and his great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Trevor Thanepohn and Micah, Daniel and Jacob Weidner. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Patricia (Ralph) Christoffel; and his wife, Dorothy Louise Carter. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Cross Lutheran Church, 8609 Rt. 47, Yorkville, IL with Pastor John Fritz, officiating. Interment will be private at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Fox Valley Older Adult Services, 1406 Suydam Road in Sandwich, IL. Friends may visit from 9:00 a.m. until the Hour of Service on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Cross Lutheran Church, Yorkville, IL.
