Assell, Gary Richard Age 64, of Montgomery, Il. passed away after a battle with cancer at Edward Hines Jr. Veteran Hospital on August 3, 2013 at 9:00 pm. Gary was born on January 4, 1949 in Aurora, Il. the youngest son of Robert and Gladys (Modaff) Assell. He attended Sacred Heart Church and grade school, and graduated from East Aurora High School in 1967. Gary was inducted into the U.S. Army on April 29, 1969. He was a veteran in Vietnam War (1970-1971), he held the rank of S. Sgt., and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, as well as other medals for his service. He was Honorably Discharged on April 13, 1971. Gary enjoyed Bass fishing, hunting and chatting with family and friends online and Facebook. Gary made many friends and was well liked by everyone he knew. Gary is survived by his sons, Dallas and Daniel of Aurora, Il.; brother, Fred Assell of Montgomery, Il.; Uncle and aunt, Charles and Rose Assell of The Villages Florida; aunt, Marylou and late Edward Assell of Akeley, Minnesota and many cousins and close friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents Robert and Gladys Assell, maternal and paternal grandparents, many uncles, aunts, cousins, lifelong friends and school mates. Gary's family wishes to express their appreciation and gratitude to the staff, doctors and nurses who treated and attended to him at Edward Hines Hospital and the social services and decedent affairs offices. According to his wishes there will be no visitation or service. His wish to be cremated will be fulfilled and there will be a graveside service at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 278 Ashland Avenue, Aurora, Il. on August 28, 2013 at 10:00 am for family and friends wishing to attend and will not be formal. No flowers please.
