Bates, Lucille M. (Birsen) left this life on Nov 9 surrounded by family. She was the 4th daughter of Franklin and Susan (Streit) Birsen, born in West Chicago in 1925. She was a devout Catholic throughout her life and a staunch defender of the sanctity of life, from conception to natural death. She was a third order Dominican. She married her high school sweetheart, Kelly R Bates, in 1945, after he returned from serving in the US Navy during WWII. They were married for 62 years. They had 9 children: Derrick (Jeanne), Atwood (Pamela), Prescott (Sylvia), Kelly Anne (William) Markham, Teresa, Duane (Judy), Kimberly (Leslie) Stapleton, Kevin (Rose), and Brendan (Leslie). They also had 25 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. She and Kelly also sponsored 3 children from developing nations. Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, her sisters Bernice (Tom) Rogers, Jeannette (Norm) Gilles, Marjory (Joseph) Simosky, and 1 great granddaughter. She is survived by her sister Loretta (William) Parrott. A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, November 14, 2011 at Holy Angels Church at 12:00 PM. Fr. John Earl will officiate.
