Davis, Hubert Porter "Hubie" 93, formerly of Aurora, IL, died Monday, July 18, 2011. He was born September 19, 1917 in Clay County, IL to George Cornelius and Ada Mae Davis. He attended Harter Stanford Township High School, Flora, IL (class of 1936), and received a BS degree from Southern Illinois University, class of 1940, where he served as senior class president. He also received an MS from the University of Illinois, Urbana and pursued doctoral studies in Education at the University of Chicago where he was inducted into the educational arm of Phi Beta Kappa. Mr. Davis began his teaching career in 1940 in Benton Illinois. In September, 1943, he began teaching at East High School, Aurora, IL where he served as Social Studies Department Chairman from 1951 until his retirement in 1979. He held leadership roles and membership in the Illinois Education Association, Illinois State Retired Teachers Association, the Aurora Retired Teachers Association, The Aurora Golden K Kiwanis club, and the Boulder Hill Gardens Home Owners Association, as well as New England Congregational Church. For several years he tutored students and also helped with graduation ceremonies at Hope D. Wall School. He was a scholar, historian, avid fisherman and family man who loved camping and traveling. His family will miss him. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years Olive M. Davis, and his brothers: Everett Davis, Delmar Davis, and Sigel "the Mayor" Davis. He is survived by his three children, Kathy McConkey of Fish Creek, WI, Mary Lynn Davis-Ajami, PhD of Arlington, VA, and Donald Paul Davis of Laguna Niguel, CA, as well as his 5 grandchildren, John Stewart, Melissa Stewart , Michael Webb, Katie McConkey and Lee McConkey and 2 great-grandchildren, Michelle Stewart and Carter Stewart . Funeral Services will be held Sunday, July 24, 2011 at 2:00 PM at New England Congregational Church, 406 W. Galena Blvd., Aurora, IL. The Rev. Gary L. McCann officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM Saturday, July 23, 2011 at The Healy Chapel, 332 W. Downer Pl., Aurora, IL. Interment will take place at Lincoln Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to East Aurora Senior High History Department Hubert P. Davis College Scholarship Fund.
