Stevens, Gerald "Jerry" age 67, of Aurora, passed away Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood from complications due to Pulmonary Fibrosis. Jerry was born June 5, 1943, to Joseph and Dorothy Stevens (Jensen). He attended East Aurora High School, class of 1961. Upon graduating he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country on the USS Monrovia during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, Jerry returned home to Aurora. He was united in marriage to Jacqueline Stevens (Vickers), April 24, 1965. Jerry tested to become a fireman for the City of Aurora. In 1966 he was hired and began his thirty-six year career in public service. Early on, Bill Baumann gave Jerry the nickname - Kingfish Stevenslater abbreviated to Fish. He and his long-time friend, John Angell, were the first two paramedics on the department. Through hard work and dedication Jerry earned promotions in 1978, 1984, 1990, and in 1993 was appointed Fire Chief, retiring in 2002. He was a member of the Turner Club, lifetime member of Phoenix Club, Tiger Club, and VFW Montgomery. In his retirement Jerry purchased a Corvette and joined the Fox Valley Corvette Club. Even this treasure could not hold a candle to his true passion-GOLF. An avid golfer, Jerry rarely passed up an opportunity to join his friends on the links. Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Jackie; his daughter Vicki, son-in-law Nick Stull, and their children Nicholas, Samantha, and MacKenzie; his son Joe (Shannon) and their children Alec, Michael, and John; step-grandson Eddie Catich; his sister Judy Thelander, niece Traci (Kevin) Lowery and their daughter Cheyanne, nephew Jason (Kari) Thelander and their son Anthony. In addition to his parents, Jerry is preceded in death by his brother-in-law Doug Thelander. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 10, 2010 from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Daleiden Mortuary, 220 North Lake Street, Aurora. Beginning at 6:00 pm, a U.S. Naval flag presentation will begin with a sanctioned firefighter walkthrough to follow at 6:30 pm. The funeral will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 10:00 am at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 27 South Edgelawn Drive, Aurora. In lieu of flowers, the Stevens family has set up the "Fire Chief Jerry Stevens Memorial Fund".
