Leonard D. Lewis
Leonard D. Lewis, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 2, 2010 at Alden of Waterford Nursing Home in Aurora.
He was born in Aurora on October 22, 1920; the son of the late George and Clara (Moredock) Lewis. Leonard (fondly known as Booty) was united in marriage to Leatha (Hamilton) in 1949.
Booty attended Aurora schools on both West and later East sides. He was a lifelong member of St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served as a truck driver in the transportation unit in World War II. He was honorably discharge in 1946. After returning home he and his brother Randall purchased a bar/tavern, formally known as Louie's Place. It was located at 66 LaSalle Street. Thus, they called it Club 66. He purchased the business in 1948 and owned it until 1985 (37 years). Booty also had a knack for building anything made from wood. He built his mother a home in 1958.
His family members include his loving brother: Donald Lewis of Annapolis, MD; two sister-in-laws; Mary Edna Lewis of Aurora, Jeanette Lewis of Maywood, Illinois, one brother-in-law, Charles Richardson, his dearest companion Mary Glenn of St. Louis, MO, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Leatha; his parents George and Clara; his siblings, Marvin and Randall Lewis; Bertha (Lewis) Craig, Elinora (Lewis) Ward and Dorothy (Lewis) Richardson.
Family will be receiving guests on Saturday August 7, 2010 from 9:00 am until the time of Funeral Service at 11:00 am at Dieterle Memorial Home, 1120 S. Broadway Ave. Montgomery, IL. Inurnment will be held on Tuesday August 10th at 10:00 am at Riverside Cemetery, Montgomery, IL.
